Cosmic Scars: How Young-Earth Creationism Links Human Sin to Lunar Craters


When looking up at the night sky, the heavily pockmarked face of the Moon appears to be an ancient archive of violent cosmic collisions. For astronomers and planetary geologists, those millions of craters tell a story spanning over four billion years, a narrative of debris leftover from the early solar system crashing into an airless world.

However, within the framework of Young-Earth Creationism (YEC), championed by Ken Ham and his apologetics ministry, Answers in Genesis, those cratered highlands carry a radically different meaning. According to this worldview, the scarred lunar surface is not the result of deep-time natural processes, but a physical testimonial to the theological event described in Genesis: the Fall of Man.

The "Very Good" Cosmos and the Cosmic Fall

To understand how Young-Earth Creationists tie human actions to celestial geology, one must look at the foundational tenets of their hermeneutic. According to Answers in Genesis, when God completed Creation in six literal 24-hour days roughly 6,000 years ago, everything in the universe was deemed "very good" (Genesis 1:31).

In YEC theology, "very good" excludes not only human and animal death, but also violent cosmic destruction, decay, and chaos. Therefore, pristine moons and planets could not have been created with jagged craters, broken crusts, or volcanic devastation. To have meteoroid impacts blasting massive holes into celestial bodies before Adam ate the forbidden fruit would imply that destruction and suffering existed before sin entered the world.

Ken Ham and YEC researchers argue that when Adam disobeyed God, the resulting curse (Genesis 3 and Romans 8:20–22, which speaks of creation groaning under bondage to decay) altered the entire physical cosmos, not just planet Earth. 

In this view, the Fall introduced entropy, decay, and cataclysmic judgment to the heavens, transforming a flawless universe into one marred by asteroid impacts, exploding stars, and orbital turbulence.

Mechanics of a Young-Earth Impact Model

If the Moon is only a few thousand years old, how did it acquire millions of impact craters, including massive basins hundreds of miles across? Creation scientists propose two main windows in biblical history for these bombardment events:

  1. The Fall: The immediate aftermath of Adam's sin triggered rapid celestial destabilization, causing leftover cosmic debris or newly created meteoroids to strike the Moon and terrestrial planets.

  2. The Flood: A more prominent hypothesis among YEC researchers—such as astronomer Danny Faulkner—posits that a concentrated swarm of meteoroids struck the solar system during the year of Noah’s Flood.

Creationists argue that this event shattered the Earth’s crust, triggered the breakup of the fountains of the deep, and left extensive cratering across the Moon, Mars, and Mercury in a relatively brief timeframe.

To explain why the near side and far side of the Moon have different crater densities, some creationist models suggest a narrow, directional pulse of meteoroids passed through the Earth-Moon system during this biblical judgment, leaving an asymmetric signature of destruction.

Planetary Geology vs. Young-Earth Hermeneutics

Mainstream planetary science presents a starkly different chronology grounded in cross-verifiable empirical data:

  • Radiometric Dating: Samples returned by the Apollo missions, as well as lunar meteorites, indicate that the vast majority of lunar impacts occurred during the Late Heavy Bombardment period approximately 3.8 to 4.1 billion years ago.

  • Thermal History: Massive impact basins on the Moon allowed basaltic lava to flood the near-side basins, creating the dark maria (seas). The cooling rates of these vast lava plains require millions of years, incompatible with a thousand-year timeline.

  • Atmospheric and Kinetic Physics: The energy released by compressing millions of major impact events into a short window such as during Noah's Flood would generate enough kinetic thermal energy to vaporize the Earth's oceans and melt its crust entirely.

The Cultural and Theological Divide

The claim that Adam's sin caused lunar craters highlights the fundamental split between empirical science and biblical literalism. 

For mainstream astronomers, the Moon is a fossil of early planetary accretion, operating on physical laws that exist independently of human morality.

For Ken Ham and Answers in Genesis, however, science must fit within a theological narrative where human morality and physical reality are intertwined. In their view, every crater on the Moon serves as a silent, astronomical reminder of human imperfection and divine judgment, a physical scar matching a spiritual rupture.
