Creationist commentators argue that the relatively short tail of a common hippopotamus could never match such imagery, insisting instead that the text demands the massive, trunk-like tail of a sauropod. However, a rigorous examination of ancient Near Eastern linguistic nuance, hippopotamus tail biomechanics, riparian ecology, and the biogeography of the Levant dismantles the dinosaur interpretation entirely.
The foundational flaw of the sauropod claim lies in treating the cedar comparison strictly as a measure of gross physical dimensions rather than material quality, rigidity, and muscular tension. The Hebrew verb used in the passage, yachpots, denotes bending, arching, stiffening, or extending with taut tension. Biblical poetry regularly employs botanical imagery not to communicate geometric scale, but to evoke specific physical properties. Across the ancient world, cedar of Lebanon was renowned for its fibrous density, unyielding stiffness, and resistance to bending under immense load.
A hippopotamus tail is far from a trivial appendage. Measuring roughly 35 to 50 centimeters, it is a dense, flattened, paddle-like structure operated by exceptionally strong sacrocaudal musculature.
