The nebular hypothesis - a challenge to Young Earth Creationism?

Psalms 90: (written by Moses before Genesis)

Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by, Or as a watch in the night.”

Some recent Young Earth Creationists (YEC) posit that stars were created on Genesis Day 4 of creation as described in the Bible, using the 24-hour day interpretation. This implies that we shouldn't expect to find stars actively forming in the universe today. However, the nebular hypothesis, which proposes that stars and planets form from the gravitational collapse of giant clouds of gas and dust, is fully supported by scientific evidence.

Answers in Genesis (AiG) criticizes the nebular hypothesis over 700 times on their website. Their claims haven't been accepted by the scientific community as well as many many other Christians. On their website an article has the below illustration and inscription.

Note: AIG used an astronomer's painting/illustration to show the “proposed” nebular hypothesis they disagreed with.

This image from Answers in Genesis (AiG) depicts the illustration of the solar system's formation according to astronomers. In the inscription they say, "The nebular hypothesis is simply a story to describe what may have happened in the 'prehistoric' solar system. There are no observations either to support the claims that natural processes over millions of years could form a solar system..”

The flip side to this statement is if we do find evidence for the nebular hypothesis it would strongly suggest that “natural processes over millions of years (statement above) could form a solar system. At the time of this article the Hubble telescope had revealed these forming stars.

Although admittedly not as detailed as AiG’s “illustration.”

The breakthrough came a few years after AIGs article - the Alma Array.

TAU Nebula: Alma Array

Note: The image is identical to AIG “Illustration” of the nebular hypothesis they disagreed with.

Alma Array - 66 antennas combined to give unprecedented images.

This photo shows the TAU Nebula, a region of active star formation, discovered a the year after the AiG article, discovered by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).

More star formations from Alma

As well the new Webb telescope is showing countless nebular star nurseries and forming stars (note bright spots.)

This discovery is significant because it provides undeniable observational evidence for the nebular hypothesis.

Again, AIG acknowledges in their article that if such a nebula were found, it would imply millions of years of stellar evolution, which contradicts their Young Earth Creationist beliefs.

Is there another way to concord these findings?

There is another way to avoid these convincing scientific observations short of denial of the facts.

The "shining through" interpretation:

This interpretation suggests that the sun, moon, and stars existed even before the fourth day (He created the heavens and the earth Gen 1:1), but were obscured by a dense, formless sky, the "firmament," mentioned in Genesis 1:7 & Job 38:9. On the fourth day, God caused the light of these celestial bodies to penetrate the firmament, making them visible for the first time. This interpretation relies on the use of "asah" in Genesis 1:14, which can also mean "made appear'' or "caused to shine." Proponents of this view argue that "asah" is sometimes used in the Bible to describe the making of something visible rather than its actual creation as oppose to Barah (-to create a new,ex-nihilo) used in Genesis 1:1 -God created the heavens and the earth. Some theologians reconcile the Genesis account with scientific understandings of the universe by suggesting that the stars existed before Earth, but Earth's early atmosphere prevented them from being seen.

Dr. Danny Faulkner (Astronomer) of AiG admits, “Another preconception is that God made everything instantly during the creation week, but this is not true either.. Did God create astronomical bodies ex nihilo on day four, or did he make them from matter he had created earlier in the creation week?” -Solving the Light Travel Time Problem, February 23, 2021

Great Christian scientists like Newton, Galileo, Bacon and Copernicus combined their faith with their science. As Bacon says,

"To conclude, therefore, let no man out of a weak conceit of sobriety, or an ill-applied moderation, think or maintain that a man can search too far or be too well studied in the book of God's word, or in the book of God's works; divinity or philosophy; but rather let men endeavor an endless progress or proficiency in both." - Advancement of Learning, father of the scientific method

May we follow these great Christians and listen to the knowledge God pours forth “night to night” from the heavens.
